History, Origin and Cultural Identity
Leva Patil (Leva Patidar / Patel) community is an advanced farmer and warrior Kshatriya clan mainly found in Gujarat and Maharashtra (Khandesh and Varhad region). The community represents a combination of ancient Punjab and Suryavanshi traditions.
The word “Leva” is derived from Lava, the son of Lord Shri Ram. The community believes it is descended from the Suryavansh (Ikshvaku dynasty).
In Maharashtra, especially in eastern Jalgaon district and north-western Buldhana district, the community is known as Leva Patil.
Large numbers of community members settled in Jalgaon and Buldhana areas and became prominent in agriculture and business.
Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, one of the architects of Indian unity, belonged to the Leva Patel community of Gujarat. He played a major role in the integration of India.
